5/8/2008 - Patriotism is a Wonderful Thing, Is It Not?

It's so, so hard not to get worn down by the pure and unadulterated corruption, greed, and lies that permeate the Bush administration. Sometimes it feels like you just get kinda numb to it all.

Then you read shit LIKE THIS and it just sends your hackles up yet again.

Patriotism as a concept means nothing anymore. And you can thank Bush, Cheney and all their neocon minions for that.

Fuckers.

I'm just sayin'...

You know what? If the House gets that bill passed, they should make the taxes retroactive to when the contracts were granted. There's making a profit and then there's selling out your employees and your country.

Wait a second...how is this the Bush Administration's fault?

What these guys are doing is pretty shady and wrong, but the fact is, they're milking a loophole in the system that's always existed. It's not illegal, nor has it ever been. How is this the fault of, really, anyone...other than the fact that it wasn't recognized earlier and cut off?

As to making the taxes retroactive, they can't. It would be a nice idea, but you can't tax someone for something that wasn't taxable before the law went into affect. It would be like retroactively busting everyone who ever took Ecstasy before it became illegal in 1985, and you could buy it over the counter.

KBR was part of Halliburton until April last year. Surely I don't have to explain the Cheney-Halliburton connection to you, Aiel? And surely you're not naive enough to think that they got as many no-bid contracts as they did completely coincidentally that the vice-president is their former CEO?

All that aside, it's this administration that hired them. That goes beyond even "guilt by association".

You can explain all you like. We've been using Haliburton since the 1960's...and they were getting no bid contracts long before Cheney got hired there, so you can tighten up your tinfoil hat and rail about it if you're bored, but it really has nothing to do with this situation.

The fact is, they didn't break any law. What they did is fucked up, but it isn't illegal. And what they did had nothing to do with the Administration, as the administration doesn't run the company. Even if Halliburton hadn't gotten the contract, KBR would almost certainly have been subcontracted to do much of the work they're currently doing because they're one of the few companies large and diverse enough with experience at the work they do, to handle the jobs they're doing. So presumably, they'd still have done the same sort of contracting they're doing now.

In addition, the whole tinfoil hat Halliburton arguement falls flat because KBR isn't the only company hiring in this fashion. MPRI, which has no ties to Cheney or Halliburton other than through the joint venture in Iraq, is also doing the same sort of hiring. And to be honest, I'd be surprised if there weren't other smaller companies doing the same. MPRI was started by a General from DIA who retired and put together the company with backing from Lehman Brotehrs and provided services in Croatia and Serbia as well as in Africa. They got their no bid contracts through Clinton. Should we blame his adminstration for the fact that they're using fucked up hiring practices?

I'll be happy to point the finger with you and say what they're doing is wrong. But I'm sorry...bad as he is, Bush isn't the antichrist and responsible for everythign that happens.

It's true. Cheney is actually the Antichrist.

Some folks sleep on a problem, but you can camp on one as well. Camping is for the mind what a high-speed run on the highway is for a car. It tends to blow out all the sludge that accumulates in the type of urban driving most of us are forced to do in order to earn a living.

The most alarming sign of the state of our society now is that our leaders have the courage to sacrifice the lives of young people in war but not the courage to tell us that we must be less greedy and wasteful.
