He's one of these people who doesn't need much, much less much more... (David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest)

5/10/2008 - Al Gore: Punk'd!!!

I guess you if ya can't beat 'em, you do the audio version of Photoshop on 'em!

Al Gore did an interview with NPR recently. Now a right-wing media shill organization has taken bits of the interview and literally spliced them together out of order to make it sound like Gore is blaming the cyclone in southeast Asia on global climate change (which he, of course, did not.)

Not only that, Drudge and Fox News picked up on the clip and are replaying it for their loyal followers. And, of course, this "fair and balanced" "reporting" is swallowed hook, line and sinker by them since they hate Gore so, so much.

It's a pathetic statement of the weakness of your side of the argument when you have to resort to these types of bullshit tactics.

You'd think Al Gore was personally responsible for global climate change or something. Sheesh...

I'm just sayin'...

These are the people who lambasted Obama for his association with psycho-preacher guy, then lambasted him for turning his back on said nutter. This is same-ol' same-ol'.

I'm not defending what they did but the phrase wasn't spliced out of order. It was parts of two sentences...the end of one and the beginning of the next...that were taken out of context.

Gore did say exactly what was reported and in that order. However, it was carefully plucked out the entire conversation to make it look like he was blaming climate change for Myanmar.

Regardless, it's still a bullshit tactic, but what can you expect from Fox News? BTW...who's the douche that did the intro to the sound bite? I wanted to smack that smug-looking prick upside the head.

People insist Obama is Muslim because his father is a Muslim and Obama attended a Wahabi school for a short period of time.

Yeah. You're right. I never expected them to do the same thing Michael Moore does.

I have to confess I couldn't bring myself to listen to it...

Well that's pretty weak don't you think? If you're going to lambast something, have the deceny to listen to it first.

Why bring him into it.

Taking Gore out of context to make it sound like he said something he didn't is wrong. Just like when Moore does it in every single movie he makes.

You're right, Aiel. Michael Moore was the first person I thought of when I read the article.

"I never expected them to do the same thing Michael Moore does. "

Hey, Michael Moore also makes jokes! I haven't seen the Fox and Friend show any signs of a sense of humor.

"People insist Obama is Muslim because his father is a Muslim and Obama attended a Wahabi school for a short period of time."

Yes, that is true. But there are still people that think he's Muslim because his middle name is Hussein. E posted that entry not too long ago about the church drawing a connections between Obama and Osama because of the similarity of names.

Oh, and don't forget that picture of Barack in the Somali garb that caused the idiots to stir.

And in any case, it shouldn't matter at all if he were a Muslim.

Actually, if you watch the YouTube clip then read the transcript from NPR, you'll see that they definitely were out of order.

Are you sure?

"It’s also important to note that the emerging consensus among the climate scientists is even though any individual storm can’t be linked singularly to global warming — we’ve always had hurricanes — nevertheless, the trend toward more Category 5 storms, the larger ones, the trend toward stronger and more destructive storms appears to be linked to global warming. And specifically to the impact of global warming on higher ocean temperatures in the top couple hundred feet of the ocean, which drives convection, energy and moisture into these storms and makes them more powerful." - from the actual transcript...

Yes, I'm sure. In the clip, he talks about the cyclone in Myanmar and then goes on to talk about what causes cyclones. The order is reversed in the transcript. The switching of the order makes it look like he's specifically tying that particular storm to "global warming" when, in fact, he says you can not do that.

Hey, Michael Moore also makes jokes!

Oh. Ok. So because he makes jokes, it's ok to completely misrepresent what people say by taking things out of order and/or context and representing it as if that was the way it originally was presented. And then calling it a "documentary."

So then all we have to do is have Shepard Smith do the piece and throw in some of his lame ass attempts at humor and call it a day.

Ah...I was going by the clip that was at the link. That's where I got the screen shot. I had to go to the other clip...the one with the NPR still shot...and listen to it again. Definitely doctored and out of sequence.

It looks like Fox took an excerpt from the doctored clip, which happened to be the part that wasn't spliced. Sorry for the confusion.

Haha. No, it's not. I was making a joke there.

Some folks sleep on a problem, but you can camp on one as well. Camping is for the mind what a high-speed run on the highway is for a car. It tends to blow out all the sludge that accumulates in the type of urban driving most of us are forced to do in order to earn a living.

The most alarming sign of the state of our society now is that our leaders have the courage to sacrifice the lives of young people in war but not the courage to tell us that we must be less greedy and wasteful.
