5/12/2008 - Me: Member of the 700 Mile Club

w00t!!! I finally am a member of the 700 Mile Club. And, no, for all you pervs out there, my wife and I did NOT have sex in the stratosphere. I got 700 miles on one tank of gas with my snazzy VW Jetta wagon with a TDI (diesel) engine. I have 173,000 miles on this car and it's now getting the best gas mileage it's ever gotten. 49.2 miles per gallon this last tank.

Had to take a photo for posterity:

Now I can post to the 700 Mile Club thread over at the TDI Club forums.

*polishes fingernails, inspects*

Takes a bit of the sting out of the $63 it took to fill up the tank with 14.3 gallons of gas...

(BTW, most of the knuckleheads on that forum getting 800+ miles have modified their engines and/or have vented their tanks to get more gas in them. Mine is unmodified.)

I'm just sayin'...

wow...lucky you! i only put $10 in...my tank is small but i get decent mileage on it. not really sure how much, but for the teeny car that it is, i'd say it's not too shabby. $10 ALMOST gave me half a tank. it's crazy the prices. it's nearly $4 a gallon!

These engines are known for getting better gas mileage as they age and "wear in".

Be glad you're not buying diesel. I paid $4.39/gallon today. Yeeouch.

Are you using hypermiling techniques? That's fantastic mileage. My little POS gets about 30 right now, but it needs a tune-up and some front suspension work. I'd probably get closer to 40 then.

I'm not going anyplace that I don't have to anymore. If possible, I'm walking. I'd love to trade cars with ya, Mr. E! :) Really...

No, Rene, no mods at all. In fact, I run biodiesel in it (B20 which is 20% soy-based biodiesel and 80% normal diesel.)

That's pretty damn amazing. I'd like to convert my car to some type of hybrid or so that it burns alternative fuel.

I paid $1.31/liter today, that's over $5/gallon. My car gets decent mileage but nowhere near 700/tank.
Wow.

Oooh that's impressive. I used to get 700 with my Ford... but it was kilometers. It looks like you are closing on the European prices now.

Some folks sleep on a problem, but you can camp on one as well. Camping is for the mind what a high-speed run on the highway is for a car. It tends to blow out all the sludge that accumulates in the type of urban driving most of us are forced to do in order to earn a living.

The most alarming sign of the state of our society now is that our leaders have the courage to sacrifice the lives of young people in war but not the courage to tell us that we must be less greedy and wasteful.
